SCREEN PRINTING FAQs

What is the process of screen printing?
Screen printing is the process of transferring designs onto material via a mesh screen and ink. Simply put, when a design is going to be screen printed, a negative of the design is printed onto a screen (to be placed against the clothing). Once set correctly against the fabric, ink is rolled over the screen, and only the areas where the design is printed will let the ink pass through. The ink then sets to the clothing which is then put aside to dry.

Is screen printing better than digital?
Screen printing is the best option to consider when it comes to printing designs that are long-lasting with a high level of vibrancy. This method also works very well when printing on dark shirts, or for specialty products. Whether digital printing or screen printing is better depends on the printing requirements. For example, while digital printing uses thin layers of ink to create detailed designs, screen printing uses a thicker ink that allows for bright, vibrant colours, even on black fabrics.

What are the cons of screen printing?
When it comes to the cons of screen printing, there are a few things to keep in mind, for example:

The initial setup can be expensive.
Less practical for smaller orders. The more colours applied, the higher the cost (as separate screens are required for each colour).
Not suitable for coated fabrics.

If your design includes lots of colours and details, we can Supacolour it. Supacolour only requires one screen however the per unit charge is higher.

How long does a screen print screen last?
With proper curing, screen printing can last for the entire lifetime of the clothing.

Things that can be done to improve the longevity of the design include:
Wash the clothing inside out to protect the screen print from abrasions.
Avoid bleaches or fabric softeners which can cause discolouring or degrade the ink.

How many colours can you screenprint?
We can print up to 10 colours with our machines. Note that if on black garments, there may be a white base that is included in this. If your design has lots of colours or details, we can Supacolour it as well.

What ink do you use for screen printing?
We predominantly use plastisol inks – these wash well and give great opacity for really vibrant prints.
